Southern Autistic School to be re-designed

Thousands of Victorian students with disabilities will benefit from better classrooms and school buildings thanks to a funding injection by the Andrews Labor Government to plan and upgrade our special schools.

Premier Daniel Andrews has announced $55.6 million to upgrade 12 special schools and start planning work on three more, including East Bentleigh’s Southern Autistic School, as part of the Victorian Budget 2018/19.

Victoria’s special schools provide an important option for families of children with disabilities – offering specialised education programs and support to ensure every student, wherever they go to school, gets the individual attention they deserve.

The Andrews Labor Government has now delivered more than $167 million to re-build, expand and upgrade 43 Victorian special schools, including $2.5 million for Berendale School in 2016 and $11.4 million for Bayside Special Developmental School in 2017.

The Government will soon appoint an architect to re-design Southern Autistic School and a new special school in Endeavour Hills will also be planned.

Quotes attributable to the Member for Bentleigh Nick Staikos

“Over the last few years, I have had numerous discussions with teachers and parents about increasing enrolments at Southern Autistic School. A number of options have been canvassed, but it is clear that we need to engage an architect so that we can plan for the future of a school that does such a great job educating our young people with special needs.”
