Bentleigh West Primary recognised at ResouceSmart education awards
Member for Bentleigh, Nick Staikos MP, today congratulated Bentleigh West Primary School who have been recognised at this year’s ResourceSmart Education Awards.
The ResourceSmart Education Awards are Victoria’s largest sustainability awards program that recognise Victorian schools, early childhood services, students and teachers for implementing measures to reduce their environmental footprint.
This year a record number of impressive entries were received, with over 180 entries from more than 120 schools across the state, demonstrating Victorian schools’ commitment to practical local action on climate change for Victoria.
Bentleigh West Primary School was awarded Water School of the Year (Primary Schools) for extending their own 5-star water management achievements to enhance sister school water education programs across Australia and Asia.
The school’s Global Water Cooperation Project involved four sister schools, and was a Finalist in the Education category of the 2015 United Nations World Environment Day.
Students collected, compared and analysed water data from sister schools in Jakarta, Bali, Dhaka and Balgo – a remote indigenous community in the Tanami Desert, WA. Students produced a movie documenting their findings to share with students and educators from other schools across Australia. The documentary was used to launch the 2015 Kids Teaching Kids Week and events.
This year, the Andrews Labor Government committed $1 million towards the program to help Victorian schools incorporate sustainability into their curriculum and provide practical learning initiatives for students and professional learning opportunities for teachers.
Since 2011, over 1,200 Victorian schools have minimised their waste, saved energy and water, promoted biodiversity and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, collectively saving $15 million through their participation in the ResourceSmart Schools program.
