McKinnon Secondary College’s new campus
The Andrews Labor Government is building McKinnon Secondary College’s second campus.
McKinnon Secondary College is a large school that is getting bigger. It has around 2200 students and enrolled 420 year seven students in 2019 drawn from a relatively small school zone. This is why a second campus is needed.
The Government provided $4.1 million in the 2018 State Budget to plan and design the new campus. During the 2018 state election campaign, the Andrews Labor Government made a commitment of $70 million to build the campus, which was subsequently included in the 2019 Budget.
The new campus will be a state of the art vertical school that will accommodate 1,100 extra students.
The campus has been designed by K2LD Architects and is being constructed by ADCO. It will create around 200 construction jobs.
Frequently asked questions:
Where will the campus be located?
The campus will be located on the Virginia Park site in East Bentleigh.
How tall will the building be?
The school building will be four storeys.
When will it open?
The campus is set to open in time for the 2022 school year.
Which year levels will be located at the new campus?
It will be a Year 8 and 9 campus that will also accommodate a portion of Year 7, alternating each semester.
Why years 7, 8 and 9?
The school has determined that this is the best model to operate a two campus school. Here’s why.
Year 9 is a challenging year. Ask any teacher – it is a tricky year in which to engage our students. At the new campus, Year 9 students will have a strong focus on STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and mathematics. They will set career goals and develop creative and critical thinking. And they will also mentor years 7 and 8 students. When students return to the main campus in Year 10, they will be better equipped to set their educational goals and get on a path to realise their aspirations.
Will the zone change?
The new McKinnon zone as of 2022 is below. A more detailed version can be found at www.findmyschool.vic.gov.au
Will a crossing be installed at East Boundary Road?
Yes. The intersection of South Drive and East Boundary Road will be fully signalised to make it safer to get to and from school.
