“I rise today humbled by the faith and trust the people of Bentleigh have shown in me by electing me as their representative in this place. This is an honour not to be taken lightly, and a role to be taken seriously for its potential to improve people’s lives.” – Nick Staikos MP
Nick Staikos is the state member for Bentleigh, a district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly covering the suburbs of Bentleigh, Moorabbin, and McKinnon, as well as parts of Ormond, Bentleigh East, Hampton East, and Brighton East.
Born at Moorabbin Hospital, Nick attended local primary and secondary schools before completing a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) at Monash University. At 19, he became the youngest councillor ever elected to the City of Glen Eira, resprenting the people of Tucker Ward – a subset of the same constituency that he now represents in State Parliament.
Nick has a long history of community advocacy and activism in Bentleigh. During his time on Glen Eira City Council, Nick worked with former Labor MPs Simon Crean and Rob Hudson to save and redevelop the East Bentleigh Pool site into what is now GESAC (Glen Eira Sports & Aquatic Centre), a major public asset for local families. Nick is also the President of Godfrey Street Community House, and an honorary life member of the East Bentleigh Senior Citizens Club.
Since his election as part of the Andrews Labor Government in November of 2014, Nick has worked hard to deliver for the Bentleigh community. This work has included the removal of level crossings at Centre Road, North Road, and McKinnon Road; beginning construction of long-awaited Southland Station, set to open in 2017; funding new cancer diagnostics and outpatient facilities at Moorabbin Hospital; building a new student hub at Holmesglen TAFE in Moorabbin; funding improved sports facilities at Moorabbin Reserve, Bricker Reserve, Duncan Mackinnon Reserve, King George Reserve, Coatesville Bowls Club, and Glen Eira McKinnon Bowls Club; and funding nine local school upgrades at McKinnon Secondary College, Bentleigh Secondary College, Tucker Road Primary School, East Bentleigh Primary School, Southmoor Primary School, Bayside Special Developmental School, Berendale School, and OLSH College.
Day to day, Nick continues to meet with and advocate on behalf of local schools, clubs, businesses, and individuals with all matters relating to the State Government. You can get in touch with Nick by visiting the contact page of this website.
